Tuesday’s with Morrie

When I say a full tissue box has been my companion throughout this blog entry, it’s about to get real. Sorry for the wait, I had an urgent meeting with 3 boxes of healing tea and copious amounts of miracle medicine. Anyway, let's get on with my February 5-star read. Tuesday's with Morrie: A Memoir of Mitch's last lessons with his favourite professor. Mitch Albom shares his memories of his professor and the wisdom he was taught, detailing his teacher's lively character traits and how the world around him begins to feel lighter.

Through the book, we are cast to the moment where Mitch's life comes to a pause, and his mentor is diagnosed with ALS. A man who not only lectured on teachings, but also lessons meant to be carried with for a lifetime. Love, family, career, he covered everything under the sun while still finding the time to dance the night away. As the story progresses, Mitch returns to his former teacher for his final lesson. An umbrella covering various topics that Mitch himself ponders. Does this purpose get defined as a mere distraction from the resigned heartbreak of life’s end, or an attempt to preserve the teachings of Morrie for a lifetime that precedes him?

He was right about one thing: 25 years later, this book still touches the hearts of many young adults, teens, and seniors. I, for one, read this book in a single sitting. It left me broken yet with purpose, a bitter-sweet ending that I'd talk about for generations. Mitch Albom's writing casts a line down to your soul, tugs at it with a hook. As I read through, I understand why everyone recommends this novel. It changes your outlook on life, death, and the future. This was my first memoir, and I thoroughly enjoyed the topics they covered, as well as the examples that further drove their story. Even though I can't relate to all of it, there are many lessons I can draw from as I traverse my 20s.

I want everyone to make their own opinions, reviews, and assumptions as they start their lessons with Morrie. If you happen to read this on a Tuesday and, subsequently, are wrapped up in blankets as the snow begins to fall, perhaps we are all "Tuesday people".

“It’s very simple. As you grow, you learn more. If you stayed at 22 you’d always be ignorant as you were at 22. Aging is not just decay, you know. It’s growth” - Morrie
